sure naked scanner test test why are you good so I would say welcome to are we are anxious to hear about your photo and what you have to offer in the way of writing and so I'm going to turn  Jonathan partner in Vista CA can you we'll see so I guess we'll just have to go with this perfect full thank you everyone for Gathering I'm here and I've seen my coming up and seeing my mom who lives up there to see you guys but with all the vacations and everything and so alumni of Big Bear sold it so I don't know if any of you were my teachers because I home to Big Bear when I was in the 8th grade so I missed probably most of you unless you move from the Middle School down to Elementary but I went to top middle and then graduate from Bieber high so on to Victor Valley College for couple years and finally made my way down to San Diego where I live currently San Diego State my English degree single subject English and also my master's degree in letter in writing settings I started working for Avid years ago many of you know what I work for them and started developing and leave let me to write my very first book called that book sold lots of copies across the tree and that gave me the idea that maybe what we did was being developed in platform so that we can bend and we are you education all the time  and we need everybody would probably be out of a year so we decided to have an online form I said that we can better serve students and teachers across the country I'm currently High School nurse in high school and now I am teaching at this is my second year teaching 8th grade so that's been a major major change for me as in a career in this working with the different kids in Howell middle schools from high school that's why I did it because I wanted to see how different it is to teach the different levels resources materials hummingbird fractal about presentations and so when I go over the resource I'm sure you'll probably don't want to try that tomorrow the first of the meeting is what's the show you how wonderful support you and your students specifically in writing and also an online form  scissors thank you guys okay is it cutting up is a pretty is a pretty fluid  okay so I'm going to share my screen with you listen you're going to the website come up so now you're looking at literacy ta this is our home page very easy to navigate this resource on our homepage we have a top navigation that can take you to the areas of the site till library teacher guides lesson plans Common Core and then school-wide we built this for two purposes we wanted to come and learn about literacy instruction but we also wanted a place for teachers to send their students was over ordering the classroom if you have one to one school initiatives are a few guys are working with you irdp platform where kids could actually login and fall along with the teacher at the same time so what I'm showing you right now is accessible both to you and your Lander students  so I'm going to take you to the school library first the school library houses 60 some do not apply to the elementary level because they are written more for the high school and the standards change of course overtime is very specific standards that are called that high school that her to flippable to Elementary and vice versa so not every school is available for elementary but there's quite a bit here for the Young Learners we know that teachers really lotion from the the frame of mind of tasso working with nonfiction versus working with fiction writing Center speaking listening so this also is going to go along standard so I know I'm either working with something. Is informational or I'm reading the story of my students or I'm riding with them  because so much about me do is fiction I want to spend a little bit of time with nonfiction so I'm in the school library and I'm going to click on working with nonfiction  and what you're going to see is that you actually going to be first group to see this is a brand new update anyone else seen this unless they a process for 4/5 a process for 2/3 and a process for K1  everything pretty much everything that weed it revolves around text so are reading process and all the skills all about non your nonfiction we do have ways to support you with save writing without text but most of the work that we do what we play in helping you to read a text and then also how to write about that text on the right hand side is going to be a reading skill and still are going to match the steps in the process is this imagery on the left hand side and the descriptions that attached image will change we're going to update reduced going to chance to do that this is written at a pretty high level this is high school so this is written borrow it's going to be a much simpler language and description it's not going to be as I level  but you can see over to the right this is are handouts for elementary K1 this is what we call our Discover or discover Series so our mascot is a little squirrel or the theme is a squirrel two we are a digital company and we wanted to look at ceiling in your classroom when you're using your smart boards or when you using your individual devices and then we wanted to look nice when you're presenting PowerPoint or presenting for the website and then it will want to make these into posters for handouts are pretty poster ready so you can even convert or flip these handouts into posters in thermometer room so that's one of the things we really pride ourselves on the middle and I want to just take you through what we have to offer so all I have done is that just clicked on the library I'll go back I've clicked on the library and I just working with nonfiction  so this is where I am with my reading process and then I choose the grade level that I'm working with K12 and I want to go with two three and I'm going to click on analyzing text and it prompts as my first step in writing or reading our philosophy a Twitter they need a writing directive whether or in writing so that the kids know they're supposed to be doing in the writing in the running fast analyzing prompts and tasks  and so this is what we would call a scale pain one on the skill page I still can move around I can get someone in for five still for right now I'm in a steel cage and I'm looking at analyzing prompts and I'll what one of the handouts everything's in PDF  so you can pull them into good reader you can put them on your smart board you can turn around and you're different to presentation software they work very well because they're in PDF the bad thing about it and I guess it's not a bad thing but for some people what's a change the handouts and you can't do that because they're in PDF but it does keep a nice stolid structure so that when you do go back from interfaced interfacer from application application you won't lose the format you won't lose the styling LOL with them good so this is so you can also with a PDF you can enlarge the image so if I have students in the back of the room so need to see something more clearly or they're sitting in the room and they won large themselves because it's a PDF I can go ahead and enlarge it and the kids can see it a lot better from wherever they are in the room just gives you an at-a-glance of what we have to offer for Genesis 1 skill so we have gold tractors to help our students track their goals so as they learn skills focus on it what are CTA is teaching skills the process of the products we want to teach what you need to know and know what to do to get to instead of just always assessing the product we want to assess the process to this comes from it's adapted from Marzano's work in the Art and Science of teaching this is a place for kids to practice skills have assessments and then color in their scores to see where they are and then there is a little bit above and goal-setting here that we have on the same page we have a planning journal for teachers who want to plan this so it's some what's the think about just a kind of walk it through as a team what are some of the steps we need in order to teach this skill what are some of the things I need to watch out for what supports I need to put in for my for my students that's the planning journal and guide replacing gygis is good stop teaching practice lets you know where am I supposed to start with this skill when what should I do as an educator and what should my kids do and it's very simple Ray learning songs of what kids do in Learning Zone 1 what kids doing Learning Zone 2 what kids doing Learning Zone 3 and this just gives you a simple clear way and most we were doing this most of you are executing best practices but this is your very clear way to the skills that are available to you  do we have a couple of guys that want you to other parts and sight we have a lesson planner that allows you to build lessons that are wait, Coraline It's All Digital great for when kids are absent great for when kids need to make up work great for extra credit great for what classroom because it's a full DigiTech lesson so I can go over that if we have time anyway have the interactive less than fine or so so we have to guide wake me up the Gold Tracker in planner what I can do is I can click on the interactive lesson or I can click down here at the interactive lesson and it's going to open age or transform this page into a presentation  when you can see the dragon so that's the theme of sore bedside grades 2 3  and you already have a ready-made presentation that's going to save you a ton of time when teaching 60 of our skills have these you're for five teacher and you want to bring down a little bit of it the still there's too much language on the you can go down to 3 so what's nice about it is that you can choose based on your kids have a timer so anytime you're on a slide and I can move my slides so anytime I'm on a task I can set my timer and I is on my kids you have 2 minutes and 45 seconds to finish this and the timer stays on the page  tell her some teaching tools and best practices that are built in tools for Best Practices that are built into the actual presentation  and some of you want to know where I am right now it out the motivations behind this company was as a teacher I was really tired of being stressed all the time by running around and making photocopies every morning but I didn't have something photocopied I have to tell my students I'll sorry we're going to do it tomorrow because I don't have the handout and I just got rid of all of that by making everything dish and now it's my digital file cabinet that I can go to whenever I need to choose the the handouts the resources that is still I need for my kids  sewing here if I click K1 everything on the right hand side you'll see updates to the squirrel so now you can kind of get where we're headed with this this is writing in the margins it's it's basically the wh questions of 5w and 1H but I mean by a poster how you can make this into a poster in your room very attractive very user-friendly appealing easy for kids to read and it's doing what we need them to do is ask questions while reading ask an answer questions while reading the best part of our skill Library  this is the reading portion of it  if I go into the Writing Center what's the meaning of you are interested in by going to The Writing Center we have writing situations the writing process and then language and if you go into the writing process it set up very similarly to what you just saw for reading  so on The Writing Center we have three a very simple three step process for writing  and we have the handouts that are related right next door of analyzing prompts or analyzing your tasks we have plans for argument writing informational narrative and narrative essay editing marks and then. You which I think is one of the best things you can do with kids for writing by far hands down the absolute best thing turn your writers into independent students even at even at the K1 which I'll show you in a minute you can teach your students had a new Prairie View at the k fierce45 C3 and then here's K1 so show you really quickly about the show you what we can do with K1 so there's K1  this is review so what we call it is. You  7 K1 there's a silk there's a process for the peer review very simple find your partner shake and say hi thank you for helping me step 2 with a partner find your tasks elbow to Elbow with each other set 3 choose who gets to go first very clear very simple  and that's not the only support me provide of course this is what we excel at is support  here are tasks find it do it say it capital letters Trace green any punctuation trace of red commas Orem selling blue I think, goes here because and they need to use what they've been taught why how much should go here based on the rules that they've learned and if we need some refresher on those rules we have what's called review task cards  and those chess cards is capital letters find it do it and in the rules are at the bottom say it the remember to capitalize the first letter you sent so I would say blank needs a capital letter because it is the first letter in it what's great about this is that we have tremendous amount of support or your students as they learn how to be Young Writers and as I said earlier it can be done by even K1 here's an example of a K1 writing  they're using our volume paper  then you can see that the student is starting to color in green the capital letters color orange the periods and we asked them to draw a yellow smiley face when they see a word they really like her as a strong word so this word spectacular  wonderful  but this is part of the purity of you process another one different level student the first grade guy looks familiar to some of you  you can see the student is coloring in the capital letters coloring in the commas  you might ask what are these colors on the face of the handout like why are they coloring blue circles and green circles teach them how to color beginning middle and end so what they're doing here going back to the task at the bottom beginning is colored green littlest colored blue and the end is colored red or teaches them the beginnings of text structure do we have all these including writing paper  which we have different levels of writing paper we have different widths we have different purposes for the writing paper all of this is all right in the same spot so if I want to teach. You all of the things that I need or all in this one stop  and then we have it for two three 33 Gibson Place P3 gets a little bit more complex but they're starting to work with apostrophes or starting to work with quotation marks they're starting to look at word choice linking words National words but they learn it in for kindergarten and first grade and they move the second and third grade and they are so much more proficient so they're ready to layer they're ready to go next stop and you guys are doing something school-wide or district-wide that is very productive and transferable so as they're learning these they're learning them in all the classes they're learning them when they move from school to school if that happens and they're moving him from grade level that they're learning them from grade level to grade level have an opportunity to really Master what we call. That's. You that's just one skill in the the writing process at this point you guys oven speaking for 30 minutes do you guys have questions at all that I can directly address things that you might want to know more about or comments for me input feedback online resources yeah sorry yes I did question was it is not like a teacher book or there's not handouts to copy out of a book in the answer to that is yes and no we do have do have printable resources we do have books but right now I'm giving you a presentation on online tool online resource yes you can from the website yes you can disseminate them to all of your students and you can make as many copies as you want you can turn them into posters District poster maker if you have one and put them up in your room you can do all of that with this what's great is you can print these from home you always have beautiful Masters they don't get all stayed in crooked and turn on the glasses over time and you don't have to worry about folding a book on the glass to try to take care of it you just print it right from the internet please have that you guys can go through in our school wide section click on Elementary we have our three audiences you can click on Elementary and on this page you can look at our student materials here  do you work at student classroom materials and then you'll see labare books the books that you would be most interested in our grades to three and four five the teacher in not the students because our Consultants are telling us that K1 they're typically not doing a lot of the handling of their own guides and free back and forth and tearing out their own paper so the two three and four five books are done and ready and I can send you guys samples what those books are those are still books that are designed we put the skills that I showed you and Order and for reading and then they it's you text you one and the students go through  the text with you and it's just really a it's a it's a book of activities I think they're about 300 pages and like excuse me all those books and reading across the top yeah right now we we just have our our reading because the the writing pieces are online we don't have the writing books we're thinking about doing writing books but we're not sure we're not sure if that's the most valuable approach for our teachers because if you're in what you know k23 your printing out writing paper you're giving them a prompt and you're off and running so I'm not sure how much of you know a couple Edgebrook wood would serve as far as benefit you were thinking about it we're just wondering do we want to put a book of you know. You writing paper and editing marks together and repeat that over and over again we're just not sure registered as a school or as individuals can ask a question each teacher receives an account so each teacher will have an account with his or her own personal login and then that sure with her is her account and then do whatever print handouts make lesson plans which is in this section so this is our lesson planner on this lesson plan Amazing by the way I just made a couple Elementary lessons away love an ocean water ice and snow growing floaters in King Singers second grade lesson plan so yes it's individual license but a district can just give us a head count and say we have 100 teachers and then we just give you 100 licenses we get an Excel spreadsheet from you with the names you into the sea and running what's great is as soon as you guys get your license all of your students have access if you click on students at the top the website  and you type in your your email address that you use the login to litter CTA will take you to a little Subs site like this where they can get literacy skills lessons and resources  so that's that's a really nice benefit to even our maybe our older Elementary that are really working with kids trying to find nohay Wilkinson's to Walmer let's work on this and glass with the iPads to go and get her some poles click on Elementary and then you can sell the elementary handouts a student while you're talking in class can pull up the execs can hand out and follow along so you can open this up the handout  and on his or her phone iPad tablet then be looking at the exact same hand out that you're looking at the classroom which is really powerful for a number of reasons they can go at their own pace you don't have to worry about making the handouts you didn't cam review any information that's showing on the screen and if you have visual difficulties too far in the back can't see the front screen this really helps them in it allows them to see exactly what what's going on the student section I got there by simply clicking on students at the top Yeah so basically we have a cherry orientation with similar to what I'm doing right now so I can go through in this is how it works and I'd probably be a little bit more explicit in like how to put how to find a lesson how to print out God's things like that and then that would come with the the purchase and then we have additional training just depends on what you guys want weed one called a targeted support and what that does as I meet with you guys just like this for 75 minutes 4 times throughout the year you guys pick the times and you could come together as fools and I can take questions that are either ask before the session starts or I can answer them right in the middle of the session Target I can basically shape the resource to fit your needs so you can say well I'm really struggling with this okay great have you been here no I didn't what was here okay well let's go here and I'm going to show you how this is going to help that's called T8 targeted support that's for 75 minutes sessions that work with schools or districts and we and that's the kind of support that we offer and then I can also come up and do stuff development as well Duck Dynasty where are the reading Selections in the reading portion okay so we don't provide we don't provide reading selections we definitely can you provide places to go so if you follow my screen I'm in common core I'm going to click on Common Core tools and then there's a thing called of naan insource reference and these are all. Ohio State University of Articles and science from grades K - 5 20 articles per subject in 20 subjects per category this is a phenomenal free no charge resource for nonfiction text and science do this kind of stuff what we do is we don't give you the the text to read we find you great resources that are free that you can then choose anything that fits in your perfume so we don't we don't necessarily have them like reading like a historian Fantastic Four history and then we have the typical article kind of  your periodicals of the word I was trying to say periodical can post for kids science daily for kids and then if you haven't heard of this guy on the California education environment initiative this is fantastic science that's new generation science standards aligned for all grades and it's totally free articles and images videos of tests it's incredible in California paid for everything  call gbi education environment initiative other questions I want to show you how much time do I have on my ovary okay  okay can I I'm going to show you this resource I think he is  what's my favorite as a teacher it's in our Common Core section and it is called up yonder, Court's rules  and it's called a writing front Builder this is unlike any other writing front Builder I've ever seen because one it's digital and to its fully, go on  so when the writing prompt Builder this is going to help you build props that have sources and promised that don't have sources business this is fantastic so get ready for this Elementary Middle High stop and talk a lot about nonfiction let's just talk fiction so I click on fiction now I have to choose do I want a reading prompt and the reason why I'm asking the standards sometimes are speaking prompts Austen to read and speak and then right writing prompts have to read something in right and sometimes they have to read something that's written sometimes after write something that has never been written so that you have to have all of the different areas in the standards are you will not address them you can't have to ask very specific questions names all the standards all of your standards for reading and when I click on one R3 this is about how characters influence plot how plot influences motivation and conflict this is how ideas are sequence when I click R3  now I have  I don't know set maybe 7 prompts here that I can use address are three so if I click on discuss Main Events it says explain to me events in the story your name is story your classmates analogical order so that your audience can easily follow the story examples from the event and now within literally seconds I have a very very good prom  where you say what does that compare contrast characters I kind of like that okay what size the main character let's call on Tim this is a websites that let me try work the better Shut Em the main character in the story and I don't know what story this is but is an N provide two character traits is strong and whatever turn off the main characters traits to your character traits this is now about themselves how are you different from the main character and how are you going to sing a story in your own life to support your ideas  Wisconsin character that asked me to Rush that's fine in a small group going to go to another standard let's do our one so are one's going to be really long because it's all about understanding the main ideas or understanding the name or concepts identify the theme of blank tails and examples let's do summarize the plot explain to me let's do a pinion on a character would you recommend it to a friend use examples so these prompts help you immediately with your play  they help you write prompts they help you understand what kind of prompts you could text  so I guess my point is in all this is that you have a tremendous resource in this front Builder that you can use to help you support your reading in your writing  in class all of the SL that
