Parent CAASPP Information
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress Summative Assessments
Dear Parent or Guardian:
At the end of the school year, students in grades three through eight and high school will participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments.
During this time, your child will take the following test(s), depending on your child’s grade level: • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics in grades three through eight and grade eleven • California Science Test (CAST) in grades five and eight and once in high school.
In August, Student Score Reports will be accessed electronically through the parent portal of our student information system, Infinite Campus. Once you are logged in to the Parent Portal, click on “More”, then click on “Assessments”. On the Assessments screen, click the "Language" drop-down menu, pick your language, and finally click "Generate". You should be able to access your child(ren)’s score report. If you are having trouble accessing these reports, please contact your school site. This report shows for ELA and mathematics. Students in grades four through eight who took the test in previous years will also see past scores so you can see your child's progress over time. The 2022 and 2023 ELA and math tests were shorter, and with fewer questions, so the scores could not be broken down into different performance areas. Students will only receive an overall score in each subject. If your child is in grade five, eight, or in high school, a second score report may be included for science that shows an overall score and information on how well your child did in different science domains.
To learn more about your child’s scores, go to the parent web page called Starting Smarter, available at https://startingsmarter.org/. There, you will find:
- Resources to help understand test results on the Student Score Reports
- Access to sample test questions and practice tests
- No-cost resources to support your child’s learning
- A guide to preparing for parent-teacher conferences
In our District, the test results are just one way to look at how well our students are doing. We use the results to find areas in which students are doing well and areas in which they need help. It is also important to know that the test results are not used to determine whether a student moves to the next grade.
If you have questions or concerns, please call your child(ren)’s school to arrange a conference with your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lisa Waner
