What is Transitional Kindergarten?
TK is the first year of a two-year developmental kindergarten program servicing children who turn four by September 1st. It is designed to build a solid foundation for success in school for “young” five year olds. The program is funded by the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 that changed the kindergarten entry age in 2014-2015 to Sept. 1.
Background Information
In 2010, California Legislation passed The Kindergarten Readiness Act, a bill changing the cut-off date for Kindergarten entry from December 2nd to September 1st. This change occurred in a three year phase in process beginning November, 2012. The cutoff date in CA now aligns with the majority of the states in the country. Also included in this CA bill is the mandate for districts to offer a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for students who are affected by the change. The TK grade level is for BVUSD students who will turn four by September 1st of the enrolling school year.
